The Monica grape is the main grape in this wine. It's one of the grapes brought back from the Spanish occupiers. It's a grape variety that's less widely grown, but it produces delicious and smooth wines. As with the other wines, the grapes come from their own vineyards in the southern part of the island and are harvested entirely by hand.

Vinification of the Perdera Argiolas

Perdera is the Sardinian name for "stony place." For this Sardinian red wine, which is widely distributed throughout the island, the Argiolas winery vinifies at least 90 percent Monica, with the remaining maximum 10 percent divided between Carignano and Bovale Sardo. The Monica grape variety is traditionally grown in the Alberello system, in the form of a tree. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are fermented at a controlled temperature of 27-28 degrees Celsius for eight to ten days. To preserve the typical characteristics of the Monica grape variety, a native grape grown exclusively in Sardinia, the wine is aged for one year, including six to eight months in neutral French oak barrels and four months in concrete tanks, followed by two to three months in the bottle.

An everyday red wine from Sardinia

Easily accessible and uncomplicated, an everyday red wine, deservedly popular in Sardinia. A pleasant aroma, appealing cherry fruit, slightly peppery, floral, plum, rose, strawberry, warm, and open. This Sardinian gem has a slightly spicy and smooth palate, with some bitterness and bay leaf, and a touch of reserve thanks to the tannins. This Perdera Argiolas is a delightful glass of wine that evokes the warm sun. With a smooth, soft finish and a hint of sweetness, it's a perfect wine. A lovely pairing with red meat, a nice sheep's cheese, antipasti such as good salami or Parma ham, and excellent with a nice piece of lamb with rosemary.
