What a superb Austrian wine, this Sandstein Zweigelt from the top-tier Pfaffl vineyard! A lot of work goes into making this red wine, as the Zweigelt grapes come from a very steep vineyard. The Neubergen vineyard is located in the Weinviertel region, a much warmer area than the rest, allowing for a full-bodied and powerful red wine from the Zweigelt grape. The 25-year-old vines are currently producing very powerful bunches, thanks in part to the soil structure. Rich clay, sandstone, and pebbles give the bunches plenty of strength.
The success of the family business Pfaffl

Roman and Adelheid Pfaffl became owners of the Pfaffl winery in Stetten at a very young age. They took over the winery in 1978. Previously, the farm had been dedicated to growing grains, potatoes, and raising cows and pigs. Fortunately, these two managed to change tack and focus on producing wines. Today, the winery is an international symbol for Grüner Veltliner. They were even named European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

With Zweigelt Sandstein, Roman Pfaffl further substantiates his excellent reputation for the Zweigelt grape variety. The vines originate from the "In Neubergen" site, a steep, south-facing slope with a slightly warmer climate than the rest of the Weinviertel region – ideal for the Zweigelt grape. The grapes are harvested by hand, then destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 28 degrees Celsius in stainless steel tanks for 23 days. The juice is regularly pumped over to enhance its flavor and color. After fermentation, half of the wine is aged in oak barrels for three months.
The harvest of the Pfaffl Sandstein Zweigelt
A crucial period for this Zweigelt, as it develops a wealth of aromas and flavors during this time. The aroma reveals hints of ripe cherries, blackberries, and a touch of smoky. The palate is very full and robust with soft tannins, abundant richness of black and red fruit, complemented by notes of cedar, minerals, and oak.
