Besides its wide range of red wines, Poggiotondo also produces a wonderful white wine made from the Vermentino grape. The winery boasts a rich history, having acquired the estate from the noble Guidi family in 1968. He built a unique winery and spent much of his time in the vineyards of the beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany, Italy. After a long period, his son Alberto, who has a long and distinguished career, took over. This renowned winemaker worked for Antinori and Farnese, among others, where he brought all their wines to a top level. Poggiotondo's wines are outstanding and beloved throughout Italy and beyond.
The harvest of the Vermentino grapes
The old vineyards, filled with Vermentino grapes, are in magnificent condition. The ancient vines now produce ripe, thick bunches that mature in a wonderful climate. Plenty of sunshine, cool winds, and falling nighttime temperatures create a unique terroir blend. The grapes grow very evenly and retain their natural freshness. All Vermentino grapes are harvested by hand to select only the finest bunches. The Vermentino bunches are collected in small crates and taken to the Poggiotondo press. Harvest always begins early in the morning to protect the grapes from oxidation. After pressing, this white wine is aged on the lees for an impressive sixty days, making it full-bodied and creamy.
The aroma and taste of the Poggiotondo Vermentino
It's a wine from a book, but a fairytale one. The aroma of this white wine transports us to beautiful Italy. We noted impressions of yellow fruit, delicate flowers, red apple, and some minerals. The palate offers a very pleasant mouthfeel, with plenty of richness of white and yellow fruit, dominated by apple. A touch of mint leaves and spicy notes on the back of the tongue. The refined acidity balance creates a truly captivating experience.
