A beautiful example of a top-quality Chianti, this one from the Poliziano winery. This smooth and open red wine is made entirely of the Sangiovese grape. Montepulciano is the namesake of a wine that has been produced since the eighth century. It is also the home of the fantastic Poliziano winery. The town has that familiar, typical old Tuscan charm, with its characteristic narrow medieval streets. Montepulciano is located just off the beaten track around Florence and Siena. This charming town is surrounded by Chianti-style vineyards. The main grape, Prugnolo Gentile, is considered a clone of Sangiovese, the primary grape used in Chianti wines.

A revolutionary change for Poliziano winery

With Federico Carletti at the helm, the winery underwent a revolutionary transformation. From his youth, Frederico had been unhappy with the company's business practices. Like many other wineries, Poliziano sold its wine to large bottling companies, who used it to refine weaker wines. Carletti vowed to change this system upon taking office and transform Poliziano into a true winery, producing and bottling its own wines. He knew, no one needed to tell him, that this required considerable expertise. The Poliziano Chianti comes from vineyards around Montepulciano, which are designated as DOC Chianti. The wine is fermented in steel tanks and is not aged in oak. It is ready to drink immediately and offers a pleasant drinking experience. The emphasis is on fresh red fruit notes of raspberries and red cherries. The wine is juicy and has good structure.
