18 months of wood aging for Reyneke Cornerstone
Before Johan Reyneke fully focused on viticulture, he studied philosophy. In 1998, he took over his mother's wine estate and decided to combine these two passions. He believes that all living things deserve an equal footing. Therefore, he immediately applied the principles of biodynamic founder Rudolph Steiner. And without being dreamy or vague, he is working towards being completely self-sufficient. Since Johan's approach, the wines have improved enormously. Far fewer sulfites are used because the grapes are harvested more healthily. And thanks to the natural yeasts used, the quality of the wines has also significantly improved. Reyneke's wines are each pure, concentrated, and complex.
The blend for this Cornerstone consists of 75 percent Cabernet Franc and 25 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are rigorously inspected and sorted in the cellar after harvest. This ensures that Reyneke uses only the finest selection of grapes for this Cornerstone. After pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation follows. Finally, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 30 percent of which are new.
What does the Reyneke Cornerstone taste like?
A classic red blend wine with a Bordeaux character. The aroma offers intense notes of cassis, blackberries, cherries, and thyme. These notes converge on the nose with hints of spice. The wine displays great complexity, with abundant red and dark fruit on the palate. Flavors of tobacco and spices also emerge slightly. Elegant tannins combine with abundant fruit and bright acidity, giving this Cornerstone the perfect length and a pleasant finish.
