It is undoubtedly one of South Africa's finest wineries, with so much terroir and power in all their wines. Founded in 1694, Rust en Vrede is proud to be part of a remarkable three-hundred-year-old winemaking tradition. Since 1977, the Engelbrecht family has specialized in the exclusive production of red wine, with an emphasis on Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Owner Jean Engelbrecht has worked hard to establish Rust en Vrede as one of South Africa's finest red wine estates, with full-bodied and complex wines that reflect the unique character of the Stellenbosch terroir.
The old Syrah vineyard of Rust en Vrede
The Mediterranean climate, with only 485 ml of rainfall during the growing season, is unique. The Syrah vines are planted in north-facing vineyards. They are rooted in Tukulu soil, composed of granite and sandstone, with excellent water retention, enabling the vinification of top-quality wines. This is necessary, as the roots penetrate deeply into the soil to provide the bunches with moisture. The result is that the Syrah vines produce few bunches, but are of phenomenal quality. Once the Shiraz grapes reach full ripeness in Stellenbosch, they are harvested by hand in the early morning. Each bunch is inspected and collected individually in small crates to prevent damage.
Wood aging for the Rust en Vrede Shiraz
Once the Shiraz grapes are harvested, the bunches are gently pressed. The exquisite juice undergoes its first fermentation in oak barrels. After fermentation, the entire wine is pumped into large 500-liter and 300-liter French-made barrels. Approximately twenty percent of the barrels used are new, giving this Shiraz even more depth. The entire oak aging process lasts at least eighteen months, after which winemaker Coenie Snyman also chooses to bottle age. Only when the Rust en Vrede Shiraz is at its peak are the bottles allowed to leave Stellenbosch.
Full and very powerful, this Shiraz from Stellenbosch
What a powerhouse this Stellenbosch Shiraz is! As soon as the cork is removed, we smell an unprecedentedly beautiful aroma of black fruit, abundant spices including pepper, and a touch of vanilla. It's time to pour this red wine, and we see a beautiful dark color with purple glints. The aroma truly unfolds, offering impressions of pepper, vanilla, spices, and chocolate. The elegant palate has a long, complex, and balanced finish. It is one of the finest wines of its kind.
