Hand-harvested for Saint Clair Omaka Reserve Chardonnay
The renowned Saint Clair Family Estate winery is located in Marlborough and was founded in 1994. The two winemaking pioneers, Neal and Judy Ibbotson, began cultivating grapes in 1978. While the grapes were primarily sold to local wineries, they preferred to work with them themselves. This led to the winery taking shape a few decades later. The building housing the Saint Clair vineyard has a long history and was originally occupied by the Sinclair family. James Sinclair, a pioneer, built one of the first houses in Blenheim here and was closely involved in the town's early development. Over time, the name of the property reverted to the original Saint Clair, which is where the winery derives its name.
The Chardonnay is grown in vineyards in the Omaka Valley of Marlborough, where warm days alternate with cool nights. The vines are deeply rooted in clay soils, which allows the grapes to better retain their fruit flavors. The Chardonnay grapes are harvested by hand when they have reached the perfect ripeness profile. At the winery, the grapes are pressed whole bunches, ensuring the winemakers extract the structure from the stems. Fermentation takes place in American oak barrels. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, which ultimately gives the wine its soft acidity. Finally, the wine is aged for another 10 months, resulting in a creamy wine.
The creamy character of Saint Clair Omaka Reserve Chardonnay
The Reserve Chardonnay emerges in the glass with a light golden yellow color. This white wine boasts complex aromas of peach and nutty notes thanks to its oak aging. The palate is full and rounded. This Chardonnay is exceptionally creamy with distinct notes of nectarine and grapefruit. A hint of vanilla also lingers on the back of the tongue. The long and elegant finish completes the tasting experience. A delicious wine from the Omaka vineyards.
