San Marzano Il Pumo Primitivo embodies everything Puglia has to offer. An excellent wine at such a great price: it's almost unbelievable. We had to check three times to make sure it was true. Such incredible quality in a single bottle of Italian wine for this price? Unbelievable. This delicious red wine comes from the large San Marzano wine cooperative. Their goal is to produce top-quality wines at a good price-quality ratio. In 1962, 19 winegrowers from San Marzano joined forces and founded "Cantine San Marzano." The start of a fantastic wine cooperative. Today, this cooperative has over 1,200 winegrowers and utilizes modern and technologically advanced facilities without compromising Puglia's ancient winemaking tradition. San Marzano is located in the heart of Puglia.
Why buy this Il Pumo red wine?
To visit the Primitivo vineyards for this red wine, we climb to an altitude of 100 meters above sea level. Here, we see the beautiful vineyards planted with this world-famous Italian grape. The climate here is very warm with relatively little rainfall. Therefore, it's important that the vines are well-rooted and can draw sufficient moisture from the soil. Because the grapes are grown at this altitude and planted close to the sea, there's sufficient cooling in the vineyards, ensuring that the Primitivo doesn't ripen too quickly. When the grapes have reached the right ripeness at the end of the warm growing season, the harvest begins, and the grapes are transported to the winery in small crates.
The taste of Il Pumo Primitivo
What a superb wine for this price range, we can certainly shout it from the rooftops. After pouring, we see a deep ruby red color with a purple rim. On the nose, this red Il Pumo has hints of plum and cherry. Spicy, with rosemary and vanilla notes. The palate is very smooth and rich, with a lovely initial attack of black fruit, overripe plums, and a touch of chocolate. On the back of the tongue, we detected nuances of light spice, vanilla, and sweet licorice in this Il Pumo Primitivo. Delicious.
