The Medella Real series was created in 1983 to honor the ancestor of the Vina Santa Rita family. Year after year, this winery wins countless awards for its quality wines. And this series is certainly no different. This Gan Reserva Merlot is a powerful wine with just the right amount of freshness. It has an appealing, delicate finish that immediately tempts you to the next sip. Perfection in the broadest sense of the word.
Special features for Gran Reserva Merlot
The Merlot grapes are grown in the Pumanque Estate Vineyard on the granite hills of the coastal region. The climate here is Mediterranean and rainy. The soil consists of granite, supplemented with clay. The clay plays a key role in water retention, adding sufficient texture to the wines. Thanks to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean, the vineyards also retain plenty of freshness.
The Merlot grapes are harvested by hand and then immediately taken to the winery. Here, a strict selection process follows, with only the finest grapes being considered for the final vinification. Fermentation then takes place with selected yeasts. The pumpovers are more intense at the beginning of the process and diminish towards the end. To preserve the fruitiness, the temperature is carefully monitored and lowered towards the end of the fermentation process. The wine is then transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. Aging lasts approximately 12 months.
The balanced Merlot from Santa Rita
The result is an intensely dark wine. The aromas are overwhelming. Black fruit, blueberries, black cherries, and strawberries mingle with spicy notes thanks to the oak aging. The palate is silky with a beautiful balance between acidity and fruit. The wine feels pleasantly fresh, yet possesses the necessary power and concentration. This Santa Rita Merlot pairs well with stews and pasta dishes.
