Germany is divided into 13 wine-growing regions. These are the so-called "Qualitätswein bestimmte Anbaugebiete" (QbA). Rheingau is one of them. For decades, Schloss Johannisberg has been one of the classics of German Riesling culture with this flagship wine. A typical Rheingauer with opulent aromas and a delicious flavor. A bottle you should definitely have a few in your cellar.

Quality wine from Johannisberg for centuries

The oldest Riesling winery is located in the Rheingau: wine has been produced at Johannisberg Castle for 1,200 years. Since 1720, exclusively Riesling has benefited from the excellent terroir with warm summers, late winters, and soils composed of Taunus quartzite, loess, and clay. The long tradition of inquisitive and experienced cellar masters contributes significantly. The result is a broad range of wines, from dry, high-quality wines to ice wine. Johannisberg Palace is also the home of the Prince of Metternich. The wines are characterized by a wide variety of nuances of mineral acidity, and their flavors range from herbal and lemon notes to sweet stone fruit. This top Riesling grows in a single layer that forms a semicircle around Johannisberg Castle. The vineyards slope southward in terraces towards the Rhine. Taunus quartzite and the fertile loess and clay layer also create ideal growing conditions. You can taste the terroir! They also have their own 300-hectare forest north of Johannisberg Castle. The oak wood from the area is used as raw material for the wooden barrels used in winemaking. The natural texture of the wood, its structure, and the ingredients influence the character and quality of the Riesling.

What does the Schloss Johannisberg Riesling Trocken Gelblack taste like?

The wine presents itself with a golden yellow color in the glass. Fruity and fresh on the nose, with aromas of lime, Granny Smith, and wild herbs. Slightly dry on the palate and subtly spicy with lush citrus notes, ultimately very refreshing. An incredibly complex, entry-level wine of the upper class, which also has good aging potential. We recommend it with fish dishes, poultry, and light pasta dishes.
