A rich wine, full of character, yet especially ripe and round. This Sideways Chardonnay is produced by De Wetshof, a company synonymous with fine South African wines since the 1970s. As the first registered winery in the Robertson Wine Valley, De Wetshof has become internationally renowned as the leading Chardonnay house in South Africa. They played a pioneering role in introducing this noble Burgundian grape to the country.
Beautiful quality wines from De Wetshof Estate
Today, the winery is led by Danie de Wet. To be included in the Sideways wine series, the Chardonnay must also be both smooth and delicious. The emphasis is on freshness and vibrancy. The grapes come from the Roberston Valley, characterized by cold winters and sunny summers. In summer, a fresh southern breeze has a cooling effect on the vineyards, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly and in perfect balance. De Wetshof now has ten different Chardonnay varieties, and all of them are used for this white wine. The chalky soil adds extra freshness and minerality to the wine. Fermentation and aging take place in stainless steel, and the wine rests for a while on the lees—the dead yeast cells—to add some extra richness and fat. For Danie de Wet, the style of the Sideways wines had to be one of delicious, uncomplicated, and smooth wines.
The taste of Sideways Chardonnay
And then you finally get a delicious glass of white wine with a rich bouquet of white fruits like pear and apple, but also a good dose of exotic fruit. A beautiful aroma, but that leads to the taste of this Sideways Chardonnay. The creamy attack offers lovely hints of lime, peach, pineapple, peach, and a hint of lime and mint. A truly superb glass, full and creamy with a long, ripe finish.
