Muscle Pinotage

When we think of red wine from South Africa, the Pinotage grape immediately comes to mind. This delicious Spier Pinotage from the Signature Collection is also made from 100% Pinotage grapes. Making a red wine from only Pinotage grapes isn't easy, and winemaker Frans Smit knows all about it. In its first years, this wine was far too acidic, making it unsellable. Thanks to a continuous, innovative approach, the Spier Signature Pinotage is now exactly as the winemaker intended. The Pinotage grapes are harvested last, allowing them more time to mature. The vinification process also emphasizes producing a wine with abundant fruit nuances. To add depth and power to the wine, 20% is aged in French oak barrels. The remainder is aged in stainless steel barrels with oak staves inside to enhance the wine's suppleness. The end result? A delicious red wine with abundant flavor nuances.

The smell and taste of Muscle Pinotage

The color is deep dark red, leading us to believe this is a full-bodied wine. The nose reveals deep aromas of ripe black fruit like blackberries and currants. There are also lovely hints of leather, tobacco, vanilla, and a touch of pepper. The aromas are very delicate. On the palate, we were overwhelmed by the wine's subtlety. All the flavor nuances are perfectly balanced. Beautiful notes of black fruit predominate, along with lovely notes of vanilla, spice, and a touch of tobacco. The finish is full and intense, just as we expected. Anyone who wasn't a fan of the Pinotage grape will definitely be now!
