The old estate of Steenberg
Steenberg is one of the oldest estates in the Constantia region. Its origins date back to 1682, when it was still known as Swaaneweide. The indomitable character of Catharina Ras founded the estate and was one of the first South African women to own land. Later, Peter van der Stel decided to build his country house there. It has held national heritage status since 1969. But it wasn't until the end of apartheid that the estate achieved its current fame. In 1990, a complete renovation thoroughly restored both the vineyards and the venerable manor house, including the residential complex.
The grapes are carefully and selectively harvested to concentrate the fruit and give this Merlot good color and distinctive character. The juice is cold-soaked for five days at 10°C (50°F) and then fermented on the skins for 14 days, with the temperature in the tank rising to 28°C (82°F). The wine is then transferred to a combination of new and used French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging for 18 months.
The velvety texture of Steenberg Merlot
The result is a deep purple Merlot with an elegant and soft red fruit character. It is versatile and has aromas of incense, violets, vanilla, cloves, and soft spearmint on the nose.
