60 hectares of Steenberg vineyards
On the slopes of Table Mountain lies the magnificent Steenberg estate. The farm was founded in 1682. The vineyards lie at the foot of the Constantia Mountains. The cool air currents of the Atlantic Ocean make this one of the coolest wine regions in South Africa. For a long time, the winery was known for its fabulous sweet wines, but over time they also managed to produce dry wines. And the wines regularly win awards for this. The soil of the 60 hectares of vineyards consists primarily of weathered, decomposed granite.
The Chardonnay grapes for this Steenberg come from various vineyards, including Constantia and Darling. They are gently pressed in whole bunches and then left overnight to settle. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and barrels. Half of the grapes are naturally fermented in older French oak barrels, while the remaining juice ferments with natural yeast in new French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Barrel fermentation and aging last a total of four months. Partial malolactic fermentation takes place in the barrel but is halted before completion to maintain freshness. The wine is then transferred to stainless steel tanks, blended, and prepared for bottling.
The silky smooth structure of Steenberg Chardonnay
The South African Steenberg Chardonnay has intense aromas of limestone and orange blossom, butterscotch, and crème brûlée on the nose. Thanks to its barrel aging, oak notes also emerge beautifully. This white wine has a silky, elegant structure tempered by clean acidity.
