The Castello Banfi estate
Banfi is a unique winery with an estate of no less than 2,830 hectares, 800 of which are planted with vineyards. This makes Castello Banfi by far the largest and most important producer of Brunello di Montalcino. The estate is dominated by a beautifully restored medieval castle. The estate was acquired by the Mariani family in 1978. Since then, they have strived to elevate their estate's wines to the highest levels of the DOC. They began by experimenting with different clones to find the best clones of the local Sangiovese grape. To do this, they tested no fewer than 160 different clones—a monumental undertaking. Ultimately, around fifteen excellent clones remained, planted in the various blocks of the vineyard. These form the basis of a Brunello of exceptional quality. Neighboring producers also benefit from the acquired knowledge and plant the best clones in their vineyards.
Castello Banfi's showpiece
Summus is the flagship of the Castello Banfi blend. It's a special blend of local Sangiovese, which gives this wine strength and depth, Cabernet, which provides the fruit and structure, and Syrah, which gives it elegance and a powerful, fruity aroma. The three different grapes are aged separately for a year in French barriques, after which the final blend is composed, giving this wine its unique character. These three grapes form a unique combination, where their characteristics perfectly enhance each other, making it a perfect expression of the potential of this unique terroir. After bottling, the wine is aged in the bottle for over a year to allow the flavors to develop in perfect balance and harmony. The result is a truly unique wine, one that is absolutely worth tasting!
