Strada Al Sasso is the flagship winery of Tenuta di Arceno, or rather, its masterpiece. What makes this red wine unique? Well, it all starts with grapes from Tenuta di Arceno's very best vineyard. This old vineyard, thirty years old, produces few grapes, but the grapes it yields are outstanding. The vineyard's location is particularly unique: the density of the vineyards, the careful coordination of rootstocks and clones to the soil, creates the exceptional juice.
The rich history of Tenuta di Arceno
Tenuta di Arceno has been a center of wine production and agriculture for over a thousand years. The estate is located near the confluence of two rivers: the Ambra, which flows to Florence, and the Ombrone, which flows to the Mediterranean Sea. In ancient times, this area was a hub of Etruscan civilization. In honor of its history, the name Arceno comes from the Etruscan word Archè, meaning "origin." Since 1994, this magnificent winery has been owned by the Jackson family, who have invested heavily in bringing out the best in the vines. And they have more than succeeded, with this red Strada Al Sasso as the highlight.
Full and very powerful this red Strada Al Sasso
All Sangiovese grapes are harvested by hand in the special vineyard, which takes place the previous morning while the grapes are still dormant. This is the best time to begin harvesting. Bunch by bunch is inspected, as only the finest bunches are used in this red wine. They are transported in small crates to the Tenuta di Arcen press. After pressing and fermentation, this Strada Al Sasso is aged for twelve months in French oak barrels. A large proportion of the barrels used are new, which gives it its strength and finesse. The aroma reveals hints of dark fruit, dark roasted coffee beans, and violets. The palate is powerful and takes us, as wine lovers, to a high point. Abundant fruit notes, such as dried plums and spice notes of nutmeg, earth, and wet slate, are present. The beautifully balanced tannins give this red wine a broad and refined mouthfeel.
