This red The Wolftrap is made by none other than Boekenhoutskloof Winery. It is one of the top producers of the finest wines from South Africa. The winery has been renowned since 1776 and was already producing some of the finest wines back then. In 1993, several entrepreneurs took over the winery, a move that has had a significant impact on the old winery. After the takeover, these entrepreneurs began surveying the vineyards and replanting several. They also decided to plant new varietals such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Current winemaker Marc Kent also has a passion for wines from the Rhône region of France. He flies back every year for fresh inspiration. In Swartland, where the vineyards for this red The Wolftrap are located, you can see the inspiration Marc gained. A beautiful vineyard where they work with complete respect for nature.

The old vineyard of The Wolftrap

This red wine, The Wolftrap, is made with considerable inspiration from the Rhone region, featuring Syrah, Mourvèdre, and a touch of Viognier. Yes, you read that right: a white grape in this red wine. But it's the Syrah that dominates, and we can taste it too. The vineyards feature very old vines, giving Marc a refined harvest. It's grown in a perfect climate with abundant sunshine and cool nights. All bunches are harvested early in the morning to minimize damage during transport to Boekenhoutskloof.

The result of craftsmanship

This is a surprisingly full-bodied and complex red wine for this price. The excitement begins the moment we open the bottle, revealing a powerful aroma of ripe plums, light herbs, and a touch of fresh pepper. In the glass, it reveals a beautiful dark red color from the Syrah grape. The aroma of this red wine, The Wolftrap, is surprising, with plenty of black fruit, accompanied by spices, violets, and a hint of smoke from the Mourvedre grape. The palate is very soft on the palate with numerous nuances, including notes of cherries and berries complemented by anise, cinnamon, and pepper. The soft finish balances everything out and completes the experience.
