The grapes for this delicious Riesling wine are grown on iron-rich red slate beds. It's anything but dry, as you might initially expect. What makes this Riesling Kabinett from Van Volxem so special is its vibrant notes of ripe fruit. Beautifully balanced with fine acidity and a refreshing minerality. A wine that will have you constantly looking forward to the next sip.
The centuries-old Van Volxem winery
Wines have been produced along the Saar River for centuries. The foundation stone of the current Van Volxem winery was laid in the 3rd century. It only received its original name when it was separated from the church and taken over by the Brussels brewer Gustav van Volxem. He immediately saw the potential of the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Saar, which are among the finest slate vineyards in the world. After four generations of the winery in the Van Volxem family, Roman Niewodniczanski took over Van Volxem in 2000. He continues the history of the traditional estate together with Dominik Völk. The goal is to make Van Volxem a leading international winery.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, followed by a rigorous selection process. The grapes are then destemmed and pressed. Fermentation follows using indigenous fermentation methods. Finally, the wine is aged for 6 to 7 months in stainless steel tanks.
Beautiful interplay of fruity notes and acidity
The result is a harmonious Riesling. Lightly smoky notes on the nose, ripe apricots and juicy yellow apples, a hint of blossom honey also shines through. On the palate, it has an elegant and mineral effect, with slightly salty hints and the juicy acidity of fresh fruit. Then, the sweetness subtly comes through, allowing the wine to flow very smoothly, again with apricot and a touch of lychee. A wonderful interplay of fruity sweetness and acidity.
