This beautiful, classic red wine from Italy owes its name to the theater. Velarino means the magnificent curtain between the stage and the audience. And we think that's a fitting choice. This red Velarino Salento Susumaniello deserves a place on stage, as it's soft, full-bodied, and ripe in both aroma and taste. The winery tells us they consider this wine a wine for the general public. A wine that captures every heart and translates to the magnificent theater curtain of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. This curtain, adorned with beautiful and precious embroidery, is considered a work of art. This red wine from the Velarino winery is also a work of art.
Completely manual harvest for the Velarino Salento Susumaniello
The vineyards for this Velarino red wine are located in southern Italy, specifically in Salento. The vineyard is quite old and is currently producing a top-notch harvest of the local Susumaniello grape. This grape, which was previously unknown in the region, has made a real comeback. It's a grape that thrives in Salento's warm climate. The vineyards receive plenty of sunshine, allowing the harvest to ripen easily. A welcome bonus is the constant breeze from the sea, which brings freshness to the harvest and allows the Susumaniello grape to mature evenly and, above all, peacefully. The soil in which the vines grow is a treasure trove for the grape cluster. Wine has been grown on these lands for hundreds of years, and this is evident in the powerful attack of this red wine. When the harvest is ripe, the Velarino winemaker has the grapes harvested entirely by hand. Only the best are selected and transported in small crates to the Velarino cellars.
Soft and ripe this red Susumaniello wine
The grapes are destemmed upon arrival and pressed immediately. The juice is stirred regularly to enhance its color and strength. After this, the entire wine matures for a full ten months in Velarino's cellars. The Susumaniello is given ample time to develop, and we taste the difference. Upon opening the beautiful, classic bottle, we immediately smell a warm aroma of black fruit with hints of cocoa. All our senses are stimulated, and we pour this red wine into a large glass. A deep, dark red color with a slight purple sheen is revealed. What a feast! We smell the beautiful juice. Then we are amazed by how beautiful this red wine is: abundant power and richness of cherries, blackberries, and licorice. A touch of spice and vanilla completes the picture. On the palate, it is very smooth, with deep flavors of black fruit accompanied by notes of toffee, vanilla, and plums. Swirl this red wine vigorously on the palate, and we also taste hints of cocoa and spices. The finish is smooth and very warm!
