A unique Chianti Classico in Super Tuscan style. This complex wine is made from Sangiovese clones specially selected by the winery. This wine truly represents the pinnacle of Chianti, refined and incredibly powerful. The vineyards are situated in a unique location, at an altitude of 430 meters. Here, the sun is perfectly exposed, and the bunches receive plenty of cool breezes and falling nighttime temperatures. This cool climate allows for a long and balanced aging process, resulting in a unique harvest. This red wine is therefore designated "Gran Selezione." A classy wine that can age for up to 18 years in the bottle.
The 120 hectares of vineyards of Viticcio
Viticcio has been making wine on its estate nestled among the rolling green hills of Tuscan wine country since 1964. The winery's production began with a desire to capture and embody the potential of Chianti Classico, and it wasn't long before Viticcio became known for its true and high-quality expression of Tuscan terroir. Since then, the winery has grown to encompass 120 hectares of estate-owned land nestled among the hills of Chianti Classico, Maremma, and Bolgheri.
"Prunaio" is made using several Sangiovese Grosso clones that have been tested on the estate for a long period. Measures are taken in the vineyard to reduce production per hectare and ensure the grapes are in perfect condition at harvest. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are subjected to strict quality control. Fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks follow for 30 days. The young wine is then transferred to French and American oak barrels where it ages for 15 months. This is followed by a further 6 months of bottle aging. This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is produced only during exceptionally fine vintages and in small quantities. A unique piece of craftsmanship.
Many wine awards for this Prunaio
Yes, we don't see them like this very often anymore: a beautiful classic Chianti at the very highest level. This wine has a very extensive trophy cabinet, receiving 94 points from James Suckling, 90 points from Decanter, and 90 points from Wine Spectator. That's saying something! Now, sit back and decant this bottle an hour beforehand. In the decanter, we see a beautiful ruby red color with a violet rim. Its aroma is intense, evoking notes of ripe plums, truffle, graphite, and delicate herbs. The nose is so delicious you could smell it for minutes. We lift the glass to our lips, and as soon as our tongue and lips taste the wine, a whole new world opens up. We are transported to the most beautiful part of the Chianti region, noting flavors of black fruit, licorice, and numerous herbs like cinnamon, bay leaf, and pepper. On the cheeks, we notice some nuances of truffle, cocoa, and plum. This wine is truly a winter wine, full-bodied and very complex with a heavy, full finish. This wine can age in the bottle for up to 18 years. It just keeps getting better! But the question is, can you stay away from it? We can't!
