Maps and location
Ribera del Duero is a high-altitude Spanish Protected Designation of Origin (Denominación de Origen Protegida, DOP) along the Duero River in Castilla y León. The demarcated origin encompasses locations in Burgos, Segovia, Soria, and Valladolid. Tempranillo, locally known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País, forms the core of the red wines; Albillo Mayor is the primary white grape. Altitude, a strong continental climate, and varied limestone, clay, and sandy soils account for the combination of ripeness, structure, and freshness.[1][2][3]
Peñafiel and its castle are a recognizable landmark in the west of Ribera del Duero.
Where is Ribera del Duero located?
The DOP follows the Duero through Castilla y León. The official product specification defines the production area via municipalities and smaller residential centers in four provinces: Burgos, Segovia, Soria, and Valladolid. Thus, Ribera del Duero is a protected origin, not a generic name for all wine along the river.[4]
The protected wine strip is approximately 115 kilometers long and 35 kilometers wide. The registered vineyard surface area is 69.82% in Burgos, 24.11% in Valladolid, 5.26% in Soria, and 0.80% in Segovia; this distribution uses 27,467.91 hectares as the denominator.[5][6]
The product specification distinguishes 118 residential centers as smaller geographical units. These are not separate appellations; their name may be used as a more specific designation of origin when at least 85% of the grapes come from that unit.[7]
How large are the vineyard and harvest?
For 2025, 27,468 hectares of vineyard and 4,899 winegrowers are registered.[8]
Tempranillo covers 26,361 hectares, or a calculated 95.97% of the registered acreage in 2025. This is followed by Albillo Mayor with 1.37%, Cabernet Sauvignon with 1.18%, Merlot with 0.83%, Garnacha Tinta with 0.39%, and Malbec with 0.26%. The percentages are calculated with 27,468 registered hectares as the denominator; official varietal surfaces are rounded to whole hectares.[9]
On the same area basis, 98.63% is planted with red varieties and 1.37% with Albillo Mayor; one hectare is classified under ‘other’ in the official table. This is a distribution of planting, not of wine production.[10]
In the 2025 harvest, 129,555,457 kilograms of grapes were delivered to wineries. The product specification allows a maximum of 72 liters of must or wine per 100 kilograms of grapes. Thus, approximately 932,800 hectoliters, equal to about 124.4 million 0.75-liter bottles, is exclusively a calculated upper limit and not the actual certified wine volume.[11][12]
Why are altitude, climate, and soil so decisive?
Altitude and climate
The vineyards are located approximately 720 to over 1,000 meters above sea level. The climate is Mediterranean with a distinctly continental character: dry summers, long cold winters, low precipitation, and large temperature fluctuations. That combination slows ripening and helps grapes retain their acids.[13]
Soils
The subsoil varies significantly. Sandy and clayey layers alternate with limestone and lime concretions; elsewhere, stony soils occur. The most important soil profiles are clayey, calcareous, and stony.[14]
Which grapes are permitted?
The product specification allows six varieties: Tempranillo (with the permitted synonyms Tinto Fino and Tinta del País), Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Malbec, Merlot, and Albillo Mayor. Tempranillo is considered the primary red grape and Albillo Mayor the primary white grape.[15]
In mixed vineyards planted before July 21, 1982, scattered vines of Alarije (Pirulés), Pirulé (Jaén), Valenciana (Bobal), Garnacha Tintorera, Chasselas Doré, and Monastrell are also permitted. This exception applies only when the normally permitted varieties predominate in the vineyard.[16]
Red wine and rosé (rosado/clarete)
Red Ribera del Duero ranges from fruit-driven young wine to long-aged styles. Rosé—officially designated as rosado or by the traditional term clarete—also falls within the protected origin. The regional name therefore indicates origin and rules; the final style also depends on the grape blend, vineyard, and maturation.[17]
White
White Ribera del Duero is made within the DOP with Albillo Mayor as the primary variety. The official description mentions styles ranging from fresh to more complex due to barrel aging, depending on the category and maturation.[18]
How do the aging designations for red wine work?
Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva are regulated designations. For red wine, Crianza requires a minimum total aging of 24 months, of which 12 months in the barrel. Reserva requires a minimum total of 36 months, of which 12 months in the barrel. Gran Reserva requires a minimum total of 60 months, of which 24 months in the barrel.[19]
The remainder of the minimum period is completed outside the barrel according to the applicable rules. Different terms apply to white and rosado/clarete wines.[20]
