Vintage Report

The 2023 vintage in South Africa is rated with an excellent score of 90 points. The wines from this year are described as youthful and still very much in their development phase.
Aromatic and expressive, like a bright, sunny spring day. A distinctive aroma that exuberantly displays all the hues of spring. That's Bergsig Gewürztraminer. A white wine brimming with perfection, made from the delicate Gewürztraminer grape. This unique grape has made waves in Alsace. Besides Alsace, it's still found sporadically around the Alps, but rarely beyond. It's therefore quite unique that Bergsig Estate owns a parcel of Gewürztraminer grapes in South Africa.

The South African wine fields of Bergsig

Bergsig Winery is a true family business, meaning winemaking expertise is passed down from generation to generation. Each member contributes something, ensuring the quality continues to improve over the decades. This has resulted in Bergsig's exceptionally high price-quality ratio; so high that many wineries in the region envy its vineyards. And there are quite a few. A whopping 250 hectares are owned by the company, a substantial amount even by South African standards. The lion's share of the vineyards is situated along the mighty Breede River, which is vital to viticulture. Without this powerful, meandering waterway, the success of Bergsig wines would never have been so great.

What does Bergsig Gewürztraminer taste like?

A Gewürztraminer in all its uniqueness. As soon as the bottle cap is unscrewed, a lush aroma rises almost immediately. An aromatic palette of blooming roses, fresh lychee, and a hint of Turkish candied fruit tickles your nose. The perfumed character is typical of a Gewürztraminer. Bergsig proves beyond any doubt that Gewürztraminer can create perfect wines even outside Alsace. The spicy, soft, and pure flavor is a feast for the taste buds. Precisely because of its characteristic Gewürztraminer notes, Bergsig Gewürztraminer pairs perfectly with spicy and seasoned Asian dishes.
