Vintage Report

The 2019 vintage in Barolo is excellent with a score of 96 points. The wines are currently still youthful with powerful tannins and have outstanding long-term potential.
A truly unique and exclusive wine in more ways than one. Fontanafredda proves once again that it's not just any winery; in our opinion, it's the King of Piedmont. And not just because of its superb wines. The winery was founded in 1858 by Vittorio Emanuele II, then the son of the King of Sardinia. He bought the estate in the hills of Piedmont as a gift for his mistress. More than 150 years later, it still lives up to its royal status.

The wines of Fontanafredda

Although Fontanafredda is a Piedmontese winery, Barolo isn't their main focus. While Barolo is the true king of Piedmont, Fontanafredda also boasts significant potential in all the other DOC and DOCG wines in the region. For example, they have planted the Nebbiolo grape, Piedmont's most important grape, in several areas, including Barbera. Gavi and Roero Arneis are also among the best in their respective classes. But their very best wine is and remains the Barolo. For this wine, they selected the very best vineyards they possess in this exquisite region. The Serralunga vineyards offer all the perfect conditions. The rich Nebbiolo grapes grow on slopes of between 300 and 400 meters, facing west and southwest. This allows them to optimally benefit from the sunshine that shines brightly on the Piedmontese vineyards.

Impressions of Fontanafredda Serralunga d'Alba Barolo The Hope

Fontanafredda Serralunga d'Alba Barolo The Hope boasts even more than grapes from the very best vineyards. This bottle contains a whopping 1 liter of premium Barolo. That's a third more than a conventional wine bottle. A real treat! But what do you get with this Barolo? Brace yourself for an intense aroma of herbs and roses in bloom. Notes of truffle and laurel easily reach you. The palate boasts the typical dry yet juicy style we know from Barolo. But it has something extra. A touch of "je ne sais quoi." You can clearly taste the oak, partly because the juice has been aged for two years in Slovenian and French oak. You'll taste velvety tannins surrounded by hints of cherry and earthy notes. Spicy and powerful, it pairs well with hearty meat dishes.
