For South Africa, the 2021 vintage achieved an excellent score of 94 points. The wines are of outstanding quality, but may currently still have a somewhat youthful or closed character.

This Jonty's Ducks Pekin White is a delicious South African white wine from the Paarl region. It's a blend of Rousanne, Viognier, Muscat de Frontignan, and Semillon grapes. Each grape variety imparts its own unique character to the wine. Its name comes from an environmentally friendly method of killing pests. The owner of the Paarl winery, Johnathan Grieve, is a strong advocate of organic viticulture. In spring, there's always a problem with snails in the vineyards. Johnathan Grieve has sworn off pesticides because they kill not only the snails but also the microorganisms in the soil. Instead, a flock of ducks waddles through the vines, happily devouring the snails.

Organic wines from South African Avondale

Avondale Winery is located at the foot of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains near the Paarl Valley. At the helm is Johnathan Griever, a true pioneer in sustainable wine. Everything revolves around Mother Nature. The grapes are grown biodynamically, and all the wines are certified organic. The result is superb, top-quality wines. The grapes benefit from the warm weather, but the water flowing down from the mountain waterfalls naturally cools them. This allows the grapes to ripen optimally and develop their unique characteristics.

Hand harvest for Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin White

The grapes are harvested by hand and pressed as whole bunches. The wine is fermented with wild yeast between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. Part of the wine is fermented in used oak barrels. The wine is aged on the lees for six months and stirred regularly. The result is a pale yellow wine with a green hue. It has an intense aroma of apricots and hyacinths, but also a delicate hint of vanilla combined with honey. The mid-palate displays ripe extract and perfectly balanced freshness, with a finely salty texture. The aromatic finish reveals yellow dried fruit, green tea, and notes of wax.
