The 2021 vintage in South Africa has been excellently rated with 94 points by Robert Parker. The wines are currently still a bit youthful and tannic, giving them excellent aging potential.
Craftsmanship at its finest. That's the best way to describe the Chakalaka Spice Route. A unique feature of South Africa, and specifically Swartland. This wine region may not enjoy the immense popularity of wine regions like Stellenbosch and Paarl, but don't underestimate it. Swartland is located in western South Africa, just northwest of Stellenbosch. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean works wonders for the grapes in this region. The necessary coolness of the coast ensures optimal ripening of the grapes.
The composition of Spice Route Chakalaka
Chakalaka Spice Route was made possible in part by an incredibly talented winemaker. It's precision, experience, and attention that have made this red wine such a resounding success. No fewer than five grape varieties combine to create an excellent blend. Carignan, Grenache Noir, Mourvedre, Syrah, and Tannat seem to complement each other beautifully. The grapes are all hand-harvested and fermented separately. Each grape is aged separately for 12 months in both French and American oak. After this, the winemaker's major work begins. The name Chakalaka wasn't chosen entirely by chance. It refers to a South African spice blend: Chakalaka. The aroma and flavor are therefore dominated by robust spices and delicate peppery notes. But now it's time to truly savor Chakalaka Spice Route. Characterful, robust, and complex. You won't get enough of it. This red wine is full-bodied, with rich notes of blackberry, cherry, and plum. The spicy palette is clearly present on the palate. You'll taste so much: vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, licorice, cloves, and so on.
