Vintage Report
The 2023 vintage in South Africa is rated with an excellent score of 90 points. The wines from this year are described as still young and youthful, with the potential to develop further.
The grapes for this wine come from vineyards in the Paarl, Malmesbury, and Philadelphia regions. These superior vineyards, the finest terroir, and the care of the winemakers form the foundation for this beautiful wine.
The most famous and popular winery
The wine is produced by the South African winery Nederburg, located a few kilometers northeast of Paarl. It is one of the Cape's best-known and most popular wineries. Philippus Bernandus Wolvaart acquired a 49-hectare estate from the Dutch East India Company in 1791, where he built the mansion, now a listed building in Cape Dutch style. The Nederburg farm is idyllically situated between the Berg and Palmiet rivers in the surrounding landscape. In 1937, Johann Georg Graue took over the winery and introduced new viticultural and production techniques, such as cold fermentation, which proved groundbreaking for the South African wine industry. With his pioneering spirit and courage to innovate, he established a tradition that Nederburg has maintained to this day. From the late 1940s, his son Arnoldus—also known as "Airhawk" (the falcon)—took over wine production and introduced sterile bottling to produce excellent wine of the highest quality. Cellar Master Günter Brözel held this position at Nederburg for 33 years and became a winemaking legend of the 20th century. Every morning, he rode his machine through the vineyards to inspect the vines, earning him the nickname "Motorcycle Marvel."A crisp and fresh Chardonnay
The vines, situated primarily on south- to southwest-facing slopes, are harvested by hand in February. Once fermentation begins, 80 percent of the fermenting juice is transferred to a combination of new and second-fill French oak barrels, where the wine rests on its lees for approximately six months. Delightful aromas of lime and melon with hints of vanilla and oak in the background. Crisp and fresh with a creamy texture and subtle citrus and melon aromas.Product details
