Vintage Report

The 2023 vintage for South Africa is rated with an excellent score of 90 points. The wines from this year are characterized by a youthful character and good structure.
A pure Chenin Blanc with abundant fruity notes and, above all, a fresh taste. Waterkloof is situated on the slopes of Schapenberg in the Helderberg Mountains. Besides wines under their own name, they also produce several wines made from grapes from another vineyard, better known as Peacock Ridge. This series of high-quality wines pays tribute on the label to the many peacocks found along the vineyards.

Fully biodynamic viticulture at Peacock

The Chenin Blanc grapes come from the Helderberg district on the Stellenbosch coast. The vineyards are situated on the upper slopes of the Waterkloof estate, 300 meters above sea level. This location gives the wine a mineral character and an elegant style. The vines have an average age of 30 years and are planted on Chenin-friendly soils. They operate entirely biodynamically, a practice they take very seriously. For example, they still work with horse and cart, as tractors and other machinery compact the soil too much. To ensure the Chenin Blanc grapes are optimally ripe, they are tasted regularly. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, after which the grapes are pressed whole bunches in a modern basket press. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats with wild yeasts, perfectly bringing out the flavors of the vineyard in the wine. Fermentation lasts approximately three months, after which the wine is left on the secondary lees for another month. Then it's time for bottling and marketing.

What does the Peacock Wild Ferment Chenin Blanc taste like?

The nose offers aromas of peach, lime, and green apple. The palate is rich and rounded, with grilled peach, toasted brioche, and sweet apricot tart with toasted almonds. A very open and generous palate. The beautiful texture is balanced by a bright acidity that adds freshness. Versatile, it pairs well with a variety of fish dishes.
