The 2023 vintage for South Africa received an excellent score of 90 points from Robert Parker. The wines are currently still a bit youthful or are slow-maturing.

The distinctive family-run Raats winery produces two different Chenin varieties. This Original is the "simplest," with an average vine age of 25 years. The soil consists of crushed granite and sandstone. These ingredients contribute to a well-structured flavor and a pleasantly fresh acidity, making the Chenin so distinctive.

The quality of Raats winery

While many wineries plant a wide variety of grapes for their wines, Raats has focused entirely on two: Cabernet Franc for red and Chenin Blanc for white. Cabernet Franc is rarely found in red wines in South Africa, a real challenge. But according to this family, these grape varieties are undervalued and much more can be extracted from them. All wines originate from the Stellenbosch region. Here, the grapes benefit from South Africa's warm climate, as well as the cool ocean breeze. This wind prevents the grapes from ripening too quickly and builds good acidity. This creates more tension and freshness in the wines. Because Stellenbosch is located almost directly on the water, it benefits greatly from the cooling influence of the sea. The grapes are carefully selected. The juice for this white wine is chilled for two to three days and then cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. It is then aged on the lees for six months before bottling. Throughout the entire winemaking process, perfect quality is paramount. The family breathes wine and the noble drink emanates from every pore at this winery.

The taste of Original Chenin Blanc

The passion is immediately evident upon pouring this Original Chenin Blanc. The aroma offers fresh notes of yellow apple, pineapple, green melon, and lime. The palate is richly structured, with notes of yellow and white fruit, minerals, and citrus, and of course, that distinctive acidity. A refined, subtle wine that won't bore you quickly. It's full-bodied, without any residual sweetness, making it a perfect pairing with a meal. Even without food, it's too tempting to resist.
