Vintage Report
This is an excellent vintage for South Africa, with a score of 90 points. The wines are currently still youthful and tannic, meaning they will develop beautifully over time.
When you think of the Syrah grape, South Africa might not immediately spring to mind. However, the African country also knows how to handle this Rhône-origin grape. At Survivor, operated by the megalomaniac Overhex Wines, they've also given some less conventional grapes a place to grow. This is precisely what makes Survivor Syrah a pleasant surprise that you really should try.
The vineyards of Survivor Syrah
To find the wine's origins, we only need to travel a short distance north from bustling Cape Town to the Swartland region. This area is the foundation of Survivor Syrah's immense success. Here, the winery boasts several leading vineyards, where the finest grapes are sourced. After harvest, some of the grapes are fermented in oak barrels. The entire juice is also aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. During this extended period, Survivor Syrah develops a rich aroma and flavor. The cow on the label is a reference to the local Nguni cattle, which accidentally ended up among the vineyards years ago. They remain a part of the vineyards today. The winery decided to give these unique animals a platform, and that's precisely why this Nguni cow is featured on the label.Impressions of Survivor Syrah
Survivor Syrah is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. It's spicy and challenging. It's ideal for the experienced drinker. The oak fermentation and subsequent aging create a vibrant bouquet. The aroma is reminiscent of fresh, berries like raspberries and dark berries, while a floral note of violets will bring a smile to your face. Thanks to the oak aging, you can detect many complex notes in Survivor Syrah's flavor, such as chocolate, black pepper, spices, and rooibos. Survivor Syrah is truly a wine to crack open on a rainy day.Product details
