Valdelagunde Cuvée Especial is the most layered Verdejo from Pedro Escudero, created as a unique blend of different vinifications from the same plot. By cleverly combining stainless steel, wood, and pre-fermentation macerations, a full, creamy, and fresh white wine is created with notes of peach, apricot, citrus, fennel, vanilla, and a long, soft finish.
The family vineyards are located in La Seca, Valladolid, one of the most important areas for Verdejo in Castilla y León.
Location / Origin: The grapes come from the family vineyards around Camino San Martín and Camino Real, between La Seca and the left bank of the Duero. The plots are situated among pine forests, which gives this cuvée a clearly defined origin.
Altitude: The vineyards are situated at an altitude of approximately 750 meters. In this warm, continental area, that altitude ensures cooler nights and helps the grapes retain their fresh acidity and aromatic tension.
Soil: The soil consists of sand and gravel, with clay in the subsoil and many rounded pebbles on the surface. These pebbles store heat during the day and release it slowly at night, which supports the ripening of the grapes.
Climate & Influences: La Seca has a distinctly continental climate, with cold winters, hot summers, and large differences between day and night. This diurnal range is important for the balance between ripe fruit and freshness.
Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are grown in espalier and are hand-pruned according to the double Guyot method. The viticulture is traditional and organic in approach, without artificial fertilizers or chemical treatments.
The strength of this cuvée lies in the combination of multiple vinifications from the same plot.
Harvest & Selection: The grapes are processed in batches to bring out different nuances from the same plot. This keeps the wine clearly connected to one origin, while giving it more breadth and complexity.
Fermentation: The wine is composed of 4 different batches, with direct fermentation in stainless steel and fermentation in French and American oak barrels. Stainless steel keeps the fruit fresh and bright, while wood provides extra roundness, vanilla, and texture.
Maceration: A portion of the wine undergoes pre-fermentation maceration, including carbonic maceration and maceration with grape must lees. What is carbonic maceration? It is a technique where grapes are processed in a carbon dioxide-rich environment, which enhances fruity aromas and a softer texture.
Alcohol percentage: With 13% alcohol, this wine has enough body for its creamy structure, while the fresh acidity keeps the style lively and gastronomic.
This white wine is made entirely from Verdejo from La Seca.
100% Verdejo – La Seca, Valladolid: Verdejo gives this wine its citrus freshness, peach, apricot, fennel, floral notes, and subtle spiciness. Through the combination of stainless steel and wood, the grape here gains a fuller, softer, and more layered expression.
