Situated above the bustling city of Murcia, in the province of the same name, you'll find the medium-sized town of Jumilla. This authentic town is essentially unrelated to other towns. A few small tapas bars dot the streets, the typical shutters are always closed during the day, and the Spanish chatter emanates from the narrow streets and alleyways. It's hard to find anything more Spanish than this. However, Jumilla boasts a unique feature within the region surrounding its municipal boundaries: wine. The Jumilla wine region is becoming a serious player and is even mentioned alongside regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero. This area also boasts one of the finest wineries in our selection: Bodegas Luzon.
The Spanish wines from Jumilla
Jumilla has a turbulent history. In the 19th century, it was the only region spared by phylloxera. As a result, Jumilla wines were exceptionally popular at the time. However, in 1989, phylloxera was discovered, and 60% of the vineyards in the area were destroyed. Replanting began in the 1990s, albeit with difficulty. The advantage is that they had the best knowledge and access to the most modern techniques. This has led to significant growth in Bodegas Luzón, among others, and the wines are more popular than ever.
The wines of Bodegas Luzón
Bodegas Luzón is the ideal blend of modern technology combined with the traditions of southeastern Spain. This is immediately evident in the vineyards of Bodegas Luzón. Besides native grape varieties like Monastrell, typical of Jumilla, as well as Garnacha and Macabeo, you'll find a strong presence of international grape varieties. Bodegas Luzón, for example, produces superb wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. The most striking grape variety is the Viognier, a true rarity in Spanish vineyards.

This latest Viognier produces one of Bodegas Luzón's most impressive wines: Luzón Mindoro Viognier: an exuberant glass of wine where the winery's expertise is clearly evident. But lovers of powerful Spanish red wines can also indulge themselves: how about Altos de Luzón Monastrell, with the characteristic flavor of Jumilla? Bodegas Luzón even produces a luxurious dessert wine: Luzón Dulce Sauvignon Blanc.
