A royal port house. Impossible to miss, thanks to its name. Royal Oporto is the flagship brand of the Real Companhia Velha winery and has a long history. The port house was founded in 1756 in the Douro region, in the northern half of Portugal. It was none other than King Jose I, King of Portugal from 1750 to 1777, who commissioned the establishment of this port house. The goal was to improve viticulture and care for all the vines in the Douro region. The country's best winemakers were sent out to do this. Now, more than two and a half centuries later, the vision of Royal Oporto remains the same, just as King Jose I once envisioned.

The Port wines from Portugal

Royal Oporto is a Port specialty. With such a long history, it's no wonder. At over 250 years old, Royal Oporto is also one of the oldest in Portugal. Port was actually discovered by chance by the English in the 17th century. Because the English added alcohol to Portuguese wine to accommodate the long sea voyage, the fermentation process was halted and the sugars remained intact. As a result, most port houses have English origins. This makes Royal Oporto an oddity, as it remains quintessentially Portuguese after all this time.

The old port of Royal Oporto

Royal Oporto offers a wide variety of ports. Classic varieties like Ruby and Tawny are excellent, but not extravagant. Royal Oporto's strength lies in its aged ports. For example, the Royal Oporto 10-Year-Old Tawny and Royal Oporto 20-Year-Old Tawny have a remarkable track record. They are incredibly popular, not only with vinologists and wine connoisseurs. Consumers are also captivated by this aged tawny port from Royal Oporto.

Royal Oporto Rosé

Another unique example of craftsmanship. Everyone knows red port. White port is also quite common these days. But rosé port? Only a handful of port houses know how to make a good rosé port. However, we choose Royal Oporto Rosé as the undisputed number one. Although technically a Ruby port, its light color gives us a summery feeling. Drink it cold or mixed with tonic water, and hold on to that summer feeling all year round.
