Ruinart, a house that produces one of the world's finest champagnes. The very word Ruinart makes us crave champagne. This champagne house has made a significant contribution to champagne in general, and beyond. Elegance, refinement, and creativity are paramount at this centuries-old producer of the world's most delicate product. A winery that has followed trends since its inception, but also creates its own. Maison Ruinart is a fixture in the Champagne region, admired by its contemporaries. A pioneer, a creative spirit, an artist. Ruinart champagne is much more than just a delicious glass of champagne.

The founding of Maison Ruinart Champagne

On September 1, 1729, Maison Ruinart was founded in Reims. To this day, Ruinart remains the oldest, still active champagne house. The founding of this magnificent champagne house is no coincidence. The story begins with the Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart, who was friends with another Benedictine monk: Dom Pérignon. A well-known name for anyone who loves champagne. It was Dom Pérignon who invented champagne with its characteristic second fermentation in the bottle. Dom Thierry Ruinart died in 1709, but his nephew, Nicolas Ruinart, founded the champagne house as a tribute to his beloved uncle. For the next two hundred years, Maison Ruinart Champagne remained a true family business. Since the early 1960s, Ruinart Champagne has been part of LVMH, the world's largest luxury holding company. Champagnes like Moet & Chandon, Krug, and Veueve Clicquot are also part of this group.

The Champagne of Ruinart

Champagne is one of the most delicate products in the world. It requires craftsmanship, experience, and above all, patience. The process from grape to bottle is incredibly complex and time-consuming, partly due to the strict requirements. However, the result is sublime, and everyone enjoys a glass of Champagne. Three grape varieties are permitted for Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunoir. The composition varies from house to house. Maison Ruinart is known for its use of the Chardonnay grape. Each Ruinart champagne variety contains between 40% and 100% Chardonnay. The exact amount is, of course, the cellar master's secret. After the primary fermentation, the bottles are bottled, and sugar and yeast are added for a second fermentation in the bottle. A bottle of Champagne remains in the Ruinart cellars for at least three years. Vintage champagne and special editions sometimes last up to 15 years! But the quality of this sublime champagne is worth it!

The iconic bottle of Ruinart

Ruinart is an odd duck. Not only in terms of taste, but also in appearance. While most champagne houses opt for a "traditional" champagne bottle, Ruinart opts for something different. The bottle's shape is an ode to the 18th century, when these types of bottles were all the rage. In paintings from that era, you always see champagne poured from this iconic bottle. With minor variations, Ruinart's bottles have remained consistent for almost 300 years. A real eye-catcher. Every champagne connoisseur can see from a distance what's about to be poured.

The champagnes from Champagne Ruinart

Ruinart produces "only" five different champagnes, all of which are brut (dry). Three of the champagnes produced—the brut, the rosé, and the Blanc de Blanc—are so-called "non-milleseme" champagnes. This means they are not vintages. The other two are vintage champagnes; champagnes from a specific year. The Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blanc and Dom Ruinart Rosé are a tribute to the house's founder and are only produced in exceptionally good vintages. However, Ruinart is best known for its Blanc de Blanc champagne. Blanc de Blanc simply means white on white; therefore, only Chardonnay grapes are used for this champagne. The full-bodied character combined with Ruinart's fresh style is world-renowned and therefore highly sought after.

Large bottles of Ruinart

You're either a champagne house or you're not. Without large bottles of Champagne, you're not considered. Ruinart has also bottled some of its beloved champagnes in these iconic, large bottles. The three non-vintage champagnes—Brut, Rosé, and Blanc de Blanc—are all available in Magnum formats. Want to really go all out? Then choose Ruinart's flagship, Blanc de Blanc, in a Jereboam bottle. This holds a whopping 3 liters of golden-yellow, top-quality champagne. A delicious champagne for large groups, as it can serve up to 24 glasses of Ruinart Blanc de Blanc. The 3-liter Ruinart Blanc de Blanc is available for order at perfectewijn.nl.

The art and Ruinart

Ruinart elevates champagne making to a true art form. The artistic spirit runs through its veins. Each year, Ruinart commissions an artist to transform Ruinart into an art form. This artist is given carte blanche—anything goes. Ruinart champions creativity and will not hinder it. This tradition began in 1896; renowned Czech artist Alphonse Mucha put Ruinart on the artistic map. In 2016, Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf had the honor of creating a stunning photo reportage in the Ruinart cellars. Ruinart is also associated with many leading art fairs, such as the renowned ARCO and London Design.
