Beautiful, balanced, flavorful, versatile, aromatic: our oenologists heaped superlatives upon tasting this wine. It's a carefully crafted wine where everything seems to be just right. This is precisely why South Africa makes wine: it's a white wine that can hold its own against the finest wines in the world. When we look at the driving force behind this Ashbourne Sandstone, we're not even surprised. None other than the influential Hamilton Russell family is responsible for the success of this white wine.

A white wine from South Africa

The wine is produced in the dazzling Hemel en Aarde Valley. This wine region is well-known among South African wine enthusiasts. Some of the finest wines originate from this area. It is located near the coastal town of Hermanus. The conditions here are perfect for growing grapes, thanks in part to the influence of the sea. Ashbourne Sandstone uses three grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc (49%), Chardonnay (25%), and Semillon (26%). These are all fermented separately and aged in oak (Semillon) or in amphora jars (Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc). This blend creates a unique wine.

What does Ashbourne Sandstone wine taste like?

Everything seems to click as soon as you remove the cork from the Ashbourne Sandstone. The craftsmanship applied to this wine is evident in both the aroma and the exquisite taste. The unique wood aging, which combines amphora jars and oak, is unparalleled in the world of South African wines. We can hardly describe it, so unique is this glass of wine. Of course, we will attempt to capture the character of this white wine in writing. The aroma has soft aromas of ripe peach and hints of fig and grapefruit. These nuances are also clearly discernible in the taste. The spicy character unfolds as you let this Ashbourne Sandstone settle on your tongue. A remarkable feat by the talented winemakers at Hamilton Russell.
