This red Bergsig Uncle Prop Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that wins numerous awards every year from the international wine press. Well, as far as we're concerned, it deserves double platinum status, because a wine with such character is a joy to drink. Unfortunately, the yield is limited and it's only produced in the best vintages. The Bergsig winery was founded by the De Wet Lategan family in 1843. So, its history goes back a long way. Today, the seventh generation is at the helm of the Bergsig family winery. The vineyards are centuries old and lie against the Drakensberg Mountains in Breede Rivier. The winery is located in the town of Rawsonville, and if you climb to the summit of the Drakensberg, you have a fantastic view of the vineyards. The name of this beautiful winery is derived from this. This Bergsig red wine, called Uncle Prop, is a tribute to an uncle of the family. He was a strong and powerful man who meant a lot to Bergsig. These characteristics are also reflected in the taste of this red Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wood aging for the Uncle Prop Cabernet Sauvignon

This red Cabernet Sauvignon is made from the oldest and best bunches available to the winery. The Cabernet Sauvignon bunches grow in an old vineyard situated at a very high altitude. At 350 meters above sea level, the grapes enjoy the sun and the cool air. Nights can get very cold in the vineyards. This allows the grapes to retain their strength and freshness, resulting in a top-notch harvest for this Oom Prop. The old soil structure lends great richness to the harvest. The sandstone, limestone, and clay contribute to the development of the full bunches. When the grapes are ripe, which is late in the season, the bunches are harvested by hand. The grapes are then transported in small crates to Bergsig where they are stacked. Gravity crushes the bunches, causing the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to bleed. By bleed, we mean that the pressure releases the finest juice from the bunches. This beautiful juice is collected, bringing the quality to a very high level. It matures entirely in oak barrels for a full twenty-four months. A wine you'll never forget, so beautiful.

The best red wine from Bergsig

It's a true gem from the Breedekloof region. This is immediately apparent upon opening the bottle of Bersig Oom Prop Cabernet Sauvignon. A scent immediately unfolds, stimulating all our senses. In the glass, we see a deep red color with a dark purple rim. Ripe aromas emerge, reminiscent of blackberries, cherries, but also cigar boxes and smokiness. The complex aroma continues into the taste, revealing nuances of blackcurrant, dark spices, and a touch of vanilla on the palate. Swirl this red wine around your mouth to release all the flavors. Nuances of licorice, gingerbread, dark chocolate, and a touch of fresh plums develop distinctly.
