What a magnificent wine from South Africa! Wonderfully crisp and fresh in both aroma and taste. The history of Bergsig Winery goes back a long way. It was already in 1843 that the winery began producing the finest wines in Rawsonville (Breede Rivier). The De Wet Lategan family founded the winery and set to work with the finest terroirs in this area. The seventh generation is now at the helm, making Bergsig a true family business. This is remarkable, as it's no small winery. In total, they have access to two hundred and fifty hectares of vineyards filled with Chardonnay, Pinotage, and Sauvignon Blanc. The name was quickly established when the first generation stood beside their vineyards atop the Drakensberg. They could see over the entire area and named their winery Bergsig.

The harvest of the Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauvignon Blanc vineyard is situated at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level. This enormous altitude creates a superb environment for the grapes. Sauvignon Blanc grapes grow evenly and slowly and are harvested very late in the season, usually three weeks later than in other South African wine regions. This late harvest results in perfect, full-bodied bunches, a characteristic we can taste in this white wine. The soil structure, primarily consisting of sandstone and loose clay, provides the grapes with exactly what they need. Harvesting takes place early in the morning to prevent damage and oxidation from reaching the Bergsig cellars.

The crisp taste of the Bergsig Sauvignon Blanc

Pouring this white Bergsig Sauvignon Blanc, we immediately notice a vibrant aroma. Invigorating notes of exotic fruit, with a touch of passion fruit, take center stage. In the glass, it has a clear color with a very appealing green sheen. Nosing the glass, we primarily smell nuances of freshly mown grass, lime, green melon, and a touch of grapefruit. The aroma is so appealing that we quickly let the wine roll over our tongue. It initially reveals fresh fruit notes of citrus, green apple, and passion fruit, followed by hints of green herbs like mint. Later, as we play with the wine in the glass, we also taste some minerals and ripe pears.
