The gem, the candy, the showpiece, whatever you want to call it, this De Toren Fusion V from South Africa, Roel 's favorite. A truly iconic wine that receives a wealth of awards every year, which is no surprise, because this is such a beautiful wine! The name Fusion V comes from the grape varieties used in this Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for over fifty percent of this red wine, making it a true powerhouse. Every country has its own iconic wine, including Stellenbosch, where De Toren Private Cellar has become a true hero of the region.
The old vineyard of De Toren Fusion V
This red wine, created by Albie Koch and Charles Williams, is known for its complexity, enormous aging potential, accessibility, and, of course, sky-high quality. But that doesn't happen overnight, and it all begins in the old vineyard in Stellenbosch. There, the vines are situated at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level. The grapes receive ample sunshine, allowing them to ripen beautifully. Everything happens very gradually because the vineyard also has sufficient coolness. This coolness comes from the wind and cooler nights, allowing the grapes to retain their strength and natural freshness. Once the grapes have reached their perfect ripeness, they are harvested by hand in the morning. Bunch by bunch is inspected, and only the finest are transported in small crates to De Toren Private Cellar. Now it's up to Albie Koch and Charles Williams to create the finest blend of the five grape varieties.
Full and very powerful this De Toren Fusion V
The finest juice is then aged in oak barrels for at least 12 months. This gives this De Toren Fusion V a powerful aroma of blackberries and berries, as well as spices, coffee, and cedarwood. So deliciously unique! The taste surpasses everything, full and complex with all sorts of beautiful notes. We noted a considerable amount of black fruit, oak, vanilla, plums, tobacco, chocolate, spices, and an undertone of currants and cinnamon. The finish is elegant and long! An iconic wine from South Africa!
