Deakin Winery has been operating as an independent winery in the Australian province of Victoria for almost 40 years. Over these 40 years, this Australian winery has gained a wealth of experience. We were able to taste the proof in the form of Deakin Estate Merlot. A true spectacle—that's the best way to describe this glass. Deakin specializes primarily in wines made with a single grape variety. This allows this phenomenal Australian winery to showcase the quality of its grapes. These wines require no other grape varieties; this Deakin Estate Merlot is a true gem in its own right.

The old vineyard of Deakin Estate Merlot

The grapes grow in the far north of Victoria, once an arid landscape, but for almost a century the cradle of Australian agriculture. Merlot grapes ripen slowly in this wine region with its extreme weather conditions. Due to the intense heat, the grapes develop flavors only slowly. This is also why the Deakin winemakers wait so long to harvest their Merlot grapes. After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed. Then, some of the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and some in oak barrels. This type of fermentation gives Deakin Estate Merlot its necessary character, making it an unforgettable wine.

The aroma and taste of the Deakin Estate Merlot

Soft and ripe. If we had to describe this wine in two words, we'd choose these. The Deakin Estate Merlot is so soft, with a single sip, it's like falling into a down comforter—so sublime. The aroma is a delight. Soft yet powerful, ripe fruit notes. These notes give the red wine some tension. You'll smell spice, but also black fruit, mushrooms, and a hint of oak. The palate is astonishingly good. For this price, this quality! Beautiful notes of cherry, plum, and berry, along with wood and earthy tones, complete the palate. The finish is elegant and refined. A top-notch wine from Australia!
