A truly special project from one of South Africa's leading wineries. Hamilton Russell Winery isn't just any winery; it's the epitome of what South Africa excels at. It's located in the WO Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, in the southernmost tip of the country. This area is considered one of the finest wine regions in the Southern Hemisphere and specializes in the classic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties. This case is a tangible tribute to the latter, featuring three different Hamilton Russell wines made from Pinot Noir.
The South African wines of Hamilton Russel
The history of Hamilton Russel is one of great success. From the very beginning, it was clear that Hamilton Russel would lead the way in South African wines. In the mid-1970s, Tim Hamilton Russel purchased a vacant estate of no less than 170 hectares. He quickly built a grand winery from nothing. It soon became clear that the terroir was exceptionally well-suited to two originally French grape varieties. Over the past half century, Hamilton Russel has become an authority on South African wines, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir taking center stage.
Hamilton Russell's Pinot Noir
A visit to the Hamilton Russell vineyards is well worth it. Located just north of the well-known village of Hermanus, it's where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow with gusto. The Hamilton Russell Chardonnay, in particular, has made waves in recent decades, but don't overlook the Pinot Noir. The vineyards for the wines in this box overlook the swirling Atlantic Ocean. The Pinot Noir vines benefit not only from the rich terroir, but also from the climate and sea breeze, ensuring a spectacular growing process. The grapes have depth and complexity, and thanks to the vinification and oak aging at the Hamilton Russell estate, these Pinot Noir wines are among the finest in South Africa.
Three bottles of Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir
This Hamilton-Russell case contains three bottles of Pinot Noir, each from a different vintage: 2015, 2016, and 2017. Each bottle also has its own label, highlighting the differences between the years. Yet, they all embody the authentic Hamilton-Russell style. The maritime climate lends the wines freshness, elegance, and refinement, while the terroir contributes to their complexity and intensity. Before bottling, the pure juice is also aged for 10 months in French oak barrels holding a generous 228 liters.
The result is a wine to swoon over. The generous aromas seem to fight to impress your senses. The subtle notes characteristic of Pinot Noir are easily recognizable, such as red berries and wild strawberries. But the Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir has much more to offer. Think salty licorice and spicy black pepper. A touch of earthiness envelops the taste buds. In the finish, the Hamilton Russell reveals its true essence with pronounced spice and velvety tannins.
