What a beautiful, classic Pinot Noir from South Africa! With this wine, the winemaker wanted to demonstrate his ability to compete with Burgundy. We think he's certainly succeeded, with a pure and classic flavor and plenty of depth. The Pinot Noir grapes come from three vineyards cultivated at Meerlust's highest altitude, at an altitude of 120 meters. The vines, some 20 years old, produce magnificent bunches. This is partly due to the climate, as the Pinot Noir grapes receive ample sunshine and the cool sea breezes of False Bay. This allows for a long ripening season, allowing the grapes to fully develop.
The pure character of Stellenbosch
Meerlust strives to create wines that reflect the pure character of its vineyards. The diverse soil, unique climate, and centuries of experience create exceptional and distinctive wines. The winery is located in the Stellenbosch wine region. Since 1756, the Myburgh family has owned the estate – now in its eighth generation. The climate is cool, and the excellent soil consists of weathered granite. Talented and highly trained oenologist Chris Williams successfully manages the vineyards and cellars.
Completely hand-harvested for this Meerlust Pinot Noir
The grapes are harvested in the cool of the morning to maintain optimal freshness. This is followed by aging in wooden barrels for 11 months. Meerlust uses 50 new barrels for this wine, and the remainder is supplemented with second-year barrels. On the nose, this Pinot Noir has notes of red berries, musk, wild mushrooms, hints of savory richness and spice, and a clean, lively minerality. On the palate, this Meerlust Pinot Noir boasts abundant red fruit with pleasant acidity, juicy notes, and silky tannins. It has a long finish.
