By being promoted to DOCG status in 1980, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano instantly found itself in the same league as Brunello di Montalcino and Barolo, for example. To qualify for DOCG status on the label, a wine must be aged in barrels for at least two years. The result is a powerful wine, deep in color, with excellent aging potential. In mediocre years, Poliziano does not produce Vino Nobile di Montepulciano at all.

A great champion of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Since 1981, Frederico Carletti has been at the helm of the Poliziano winery. His appointment brought about a major change within the winery. Previously, Poliziano sold its wines to large bottling companies, who then used them to refine weaker wines. Carletti's goal was to create a winery that produced and bottled its own wine. And he certainly succeeded. The company's reputation has risen dramatically. Poliziano is now widely regarded as one of the great pioneers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. In exceptional years, Poliziano creates a separate Riserva from its two top vineyards, in addition to the "regular" Vino Nobile. These wines are released under their respective names: Vigneto Caggiole and Vigna Asinone. The Caggiole is the more elegant of the two: a complex wine with a hint of roses on the nose, and it's quicker to drink. The Asinone needs more time, is more full-bodied, and more robust. A true powerhouse. Both wines are well-suited for long-term aging. The result is this Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: structured, long-lasting, with intense aromas that faithfully represent its Tuscan origins and the ancient bond between land, people, and culture.

A beautiful sturdy glass from Poliziano

This Nobile di Montepulciano from Poliziano has a nose of black fruit, plums, leather, and vanilla, while the palate is robust, concentrated, creamy, and rich, with some tannins. A lovely pairing with game, red meat, or a strong cheese.
