Vinification and grapes

The Schiavenza Cerretta 2021 is a Barolo from the renowned Cerretta cru in Serralunga d'Alba. The wine is made from 100 % Nebbiolo, a grape known for its rich tannins, crisp acidity, and long aging. Schiavenza follows traditional methods: hand harvesting, fermentation in cement vats, and then extended aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. This ensures a pure expression of grape and terroir, with the power and depth so characteristic of Barolo from Serralunga.

The Schiavenza winery

Schiavenza was founded in 1956 by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria and is located in Serralunga d'Alba. Today, the estate is run by the Pira family. The name Schiavenza refers to the farmers who once worked the land for large landowners. The winery is known for its classic Barolo style: restrained, with long macerations and aging, and always faithful to the traditions of the Langhe region.

Volume 2021

The 2021 vintage is considered an exceptionally good year in Barolo, with firm tannins and slow maturation. This means wines like this Cerretta have enormous depth and power, but also need time to fully develop. For collectors and lovers of classic Barolo, this is a vintage that can effortlessly develop for decades.

Cerretta compared to other crus

The Cerretta cru produces Schiavenza's most structured and powerful wines, thanks to the chalky soils that provide firm tannins and great ageing potential.
The Prapò cru produces Barolos with greater elegance and aromatic refinement, making them generally a little quicker to access, yet still able to age well.
The Broglio cru is known for its softer texture and fruitier style. These wines are ready to drink sooner and offer an accessible introduction to the classic Serralunga signature.

Food pairing

The Schiavenza Cerretta 2021 pairs best with rich and robust dishes. Think brasato al Barolo (braised beef), game dishes like venison or wild boar, or mushroom and truffle stews. The wine also reveals its complexity and power with aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno.
