Vinification and grapes

The Schiavenza Broglio 2021 is a Barolo from the Broglio cru in Serralunga d'Alba. The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo , harvested from vineyards with soils rich in limestone and clay, but with a softer structure than Cerretta or Prapò. Here too, Schiavenza follows the traditional method: hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation in cement vats, and long aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. This results in a Barolo that remains true to the house's classic style, but with a slightly more accessible character.

The Schiavenza winery

Schiavenza was founded in 1956 by brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria and is located in Serralunga d'Alba. The Pira family is now at the helm. The estate has built its reputation by adhering to the traditional Barolo style. The name Schiavenza , a reference to the tenant farmers who once worked the land, emphasizes the strong connection to the region and its history.

Volume 2021

The 2021 vintage in Barolo is considered exceptionally good, rated 97T According to Robert Parker, this results in top-quality wines with firm tannins and slow maturation. For the Broglio cru, this results in a Barolo that retains its fruity and accessible character, but also enjoys a much longer lifespan than usual due to the quality of the vintage.

Broglio compared to other crus

The Broglio cru offers the most accessible style within the Schiavenza line. This Barolo displays softer tannins and more fruit expression, making it quicker to drink and giving it an open character.
The Cru Cerretta produces the most powerful and structured wines, which only fully blossom after many years.
The Cru Prapò forms the middle ground between both styles, with elegance and refinement alongside power and depth.

Food pairing

The 2021 Schiavenza Broglio pairs beautifully with dishes that complement its fruity and accessible style. Think tajarin with ragù, vitello tonnato, or roasted poultry. Semi-mature cheeses like Toma Piemontese also pair beautifully with this wine.
