The Chocolate Block, the flagship winery of Boekenhoutskloof, reflects winemaker Marc's passion for South African viticulture and his admiration for the Rhône region in France. Every year, Marc travels to the Rhône to gain new ideas and taste wines, which enriches his approach in the Boekenhoutskloof vineyards. This exceptional red wine, blended primarily from Syrah with additions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Grenache, and a touch of Viognier, is known for its intensity and dynamic character.
The Refined Vineyards in Swartland
The select plots in the Swartland region, known for their rich granite and slate soils, are home to the grapes for The Chocolate Block. These soils contribute to the wine's full flavor and quality. Intensive work in the vineyards results in a powerful yet controlled yield. Each bunch is harvested by hand to ensure the purity of The Chocolate Block. The black juice then undergoes twelve months of oak aging in a mix of different wood types and used barrels, giving the wine subtle oak influences without being overpowering.
