Pinot Gris Wine

Buy or order Pinot Gris wine

The Pinot Gris grape and Alsace, or Alsace in French, are inextricably linked. This beautiful grape established its roots years ago in the beautiful Alsace wine region. Pinot Gris is also known in Italy as Pinot Grigio and in Germany as Grauburgunder. The grape naturally has a grayish-red hue on its skin, truly beautiful to look at. It's also sometimes called the gray grape; while this isn't reflected in the wine's color, it does add extra flavor. Pinot Gris bunches are vulnerable to rot and mold, so the vineyard must be in top condition. Pinot Gris also naturally has a higher sugar content and relatively low acidity, so you'll always taste a natural sweet undertone in a Pinot Gris. The harvest is always hand-picked to select the best bunches.

The history of Pinot Gris

There are long stories about the history of the Pinot Gris grape, but we believe it was first planted in Burgundy and later brought to Alsace and regions like Germany and Veneto by Johann Ruland around 1700. Each country experiences the Pinot Gris grape differently, and the taste impressions also differ. However, they all possess a soft and refined character. The natural sweetness of the grape can be counteracted to bring in the harvest very early. This is often done in Italy and Germany, and in Alsace, Pinot Gris is allowed to ripen further, developing a lovely, slightly sweet undertone.

Pinot Gris from Alsace is the perfect wine for Asian cuisine or dishes with a lot of spice. This means, for example, curry, hot peppers, and perhaps coconut sauce. Its slightly sweet initial notes allow the wine to stand out with very spicy and full-bodied dishes. Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio from Italy pair perfectly with dishes like pasta, fish dishes, pizza, and of course, a nice piece of pork.

How long can I keep a Pinot Gris wine?

Can a bottle of Pinot Gris age in the bottle? A full-bodied Alsace wine certainly can. Bottle aging gives the wine even fuller and deeper flavors, with hints of yellow fruit, apricots, and notes of pear and red apple. Approximately four to five years after the harvest, the wine can continue aging in the bottle. Exceptional quality wines like Vie de Romans and Trimbach Cuvée Reserve Personelle can age in the bottle for up to 15 years, provided they are perfectly stored. Young wines and relatively inexpensive Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio wines should be bottled for a maximum of two to three years. If you're unsure, feel free to ask us for advice.
