Vermentino

Buy or order Vermentino wine

Vermentino is becoming increasingly common. This delicious grape has made a comeback, and more and more enthusiasts are appreciating Vermentino wine. This native grape variety has been cultivated on the island of Sardinia since the 14th century. This is also where the origins of this Italian grape originate. Today, half of all Vermentino wines are still produced here. But the grape is also gaining ground in Sicily, Umbria, and Tuscany in Italy. It has also spread to regions like Provence and Languedoc. It's no wonder, as they share the same climate as Italy, which Vermentino loves.

In France, the Vermentino grape is often called Rolle and is primarily used in the production of exquisite white wines. Now, back to Italy, where Vermentino wines have been increasingly consumed in recent years. Why is this? Quite simply, over the years, the vines have matured, and the quality of the grapes has improved significantly. There's already talk of Vermentino becoming the Sancerre of Italy. The grape thrives in warm climates and is often planted in rich clay and sandy soils.

Vermentino wine for connoisseurs?

Wine connoisseurs distinguish two distinct types of Vermentino: a fresh style and a floral style. The fresh style offers a beautiful bouquet of citrus fruit, grapefruit, and delicate minerals. The palate is always very pure and elegant, with abundant richness of white and citrus fruit, and often notes of green herbs like mint. In the floral and fuller-bodied Vermentino, like the Meri and Banfi La Pettegola wines, you often taste notes of ripe yellow fruit, a touch of anise, and dill. The palate is also thicker and fuller in structure. Plenty of richness of yellow fruit with the presence of fresh acidity. Simply a delicious glass of wine for any time of day.

What do we eat with a Vermentino?

The most beautiful wine and food pairings with Vermentino are undoubtedly various types of fish, as well as shellfish and crustaceans. The robust Vermentino wines pair well with robust fish like salmon, while the fresh style complements whitefish. But Vermentino is especially well-suited as an aperitif, a wonderful way to start a fine dinner. Serve it with prosciutto or calamari for a great start. It's also the perfect wine for Mediterranean cuisine, pairing dishes like ravioli, risotto, and vegetables.

Can you keep a white Vermentino wine for a long time? Not really, because the wine loses its freshness with long bottle aging. Top Vermentino wines like Frescovbaldi Massovino and Cala Silente can be enjoyed for up to four years after the vintage. The flavor of the Vermentino will then become fuller and more powerful.
