Burgundy

Order Burgundy wine

When you think of high-quality French wines, the Burgundy wine region quickly comes to mind. For centuries, wine lovers have been able to enjoy everything this region has to offer, and Burgundy wines remain popular today. Here too, we have the Romans to thank for the wines, who planted the first vines in Burgundy around the year 1000. And with such a large area, we find a wide variety of wines.

The grape varieties in Burgundy

We often see grape varieties not listed on Burgundy wine labels. In that case, you know that the white wines are made from Chardonnay and the reds from Pinot Noir. Typical of this region is that the grapes are blended with other varieties. Burgundy enjoys a predominantly continental climate, meaning hot summers and cold winters. This fluctuation also means that the quality of Burgundy wines varies considerably. For example, a Chardonnay is never the same; in the north, they are very fresh, while in the south, they are somewhat oily.

Besides the well-known Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, we also find other grape varieties such as Aligonté. This grape variety is identified on the label as AOC Bourgonge Aligoté. This grape can produce beautifully ripe wines, but because the best vineyard sites are already occupied by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, you rarely find highly complex Aligonté wines. Further south in Burgundy, we find the Beaujoleis region. This region is known for its Gamay wines, which guarantee young, drinkable wines.

Burgundy and its diversity

Burgundy boasts many different regions, each with its own unique character. In Burgundy, the best wines come from the best vineyards, not the best wineries. For example, a vineyard in Burgundy can have multiple owners. The quality of Burgundy wines is defined by four quality categories: AOC Bourgogne, Apellations Villages, Premier Crus, and Grand Crus. These quality designations are vinified throughout the Burgundy region. For example, in the north, you have the Chablis region. This region primarily produces white Chardonnay wines. The La Chablisienne winery knows better than anyone how to maximize the region's potential. The Chablis Le Finage Chardonnay is its signature wine. A refined wine with complexity and refinement.

The vineyards in Cote d'Or are situated on sunny hillsides and grow both red and white grape varieties. This results in classic, full-bodied wines with a wide variety of aromas. In the south lies Cote de Beaune, the birthplace of rich Burgundian Chardonnay wines. While the focus is on Chardonnay, beautiful Pinot Noir wines are also produced here. In the southernmost part of Burgundy lies the Maconnais region. On the rolling hills, the grapes here enjoy a warmer climate. Thanks to the limestone soils, fresh wines are produced. A beautiful example is the Chanson Pouilly Fuisse, a traditionally made wine with delicate and refreshing aromas.
