Bacalhoa Winery is a collective name; you can now find 11 wineries under this brand. This is partly thanks to José Berardo, who aimed to unite Portugal's finest wineries under one banner. Since 1998, this effort has gained momentum, and Bacalhoa Winery has taken shape. The name Bacalhoa is named after the beautiful estate on the Setúbal Peninsula, which forms the radiant centerpiece of Bacalhoa wines: Palácio e Quinta da Bacalhôa. The name Bacalhoa comes from the wife of the estate's former owner, Dom Jeronimo Manuel. Bacalhoa means "codfish" in Portuguese; let's just say his wife doesn't possess the classic beauty of the average Portuguese woman.
