The name Bacalhoa is named after the beautiful estate on the Setúbal Peninsula, which forms the radiant centerpiece of Bacalhoa wines: Palácio e Quinta da Bacalhôa. The name Bacalhoa comes from the wife of the estate's former owner, Dom Jeronimo Manuel. Bacalhoa means "codfish" in Portuguese; let's just say his wife doesn't possess the classic beauty of the average Portuguese woman.
