When we talk about perfect wines, the De Toren Private Cellar estate often comes up. This winery, which only saw its first vintage in 1999, has conquered the world in a relatively short time. De Toren wines are featured prominently on the wine lists of many Michelin-starred restaurants. The flagship of this South African winery is De Toren Fusion V, a superb glass of wine that sits at the top of the podium of South African wines.

The winery was founded by Emil van Dulk. His ancestors have roots in the Scheveningen fishing community, so De Toren has a Dutch edge. The estate is located in the heart of Stellenbosch, just a half-hour drive from the bustling metropolis of Cape Town. From the outset, Emil van Dulk decided to focus on grape varieties with a Bordeaux heritage. He was the first to make Bordeaux-style wine, a practice that has since been copied by many wineries.

South African wine from De Toren

Besides De Toren's best-selling wine, Fusion V, the winery has much more to offer. Consider De Toren Diversity, a simple yet perfectly executed blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The grapes come from vineyards that are also used for the winery's flagship cuvée. For several years now, the winery has also offered De Toren Delicate, a red wine that should be enjoyed slightly chilled. Ideal for balmy summer evenings.

The Tower The Black Lion

All De Toren wines are among the absolute finest in South Africa. However, De Toren has two wines that stand head and shoulders above the rest. One of these is De Toren The Black Lion. It is by far the finest wine in the range. The wine is produced in limited quantities, and fortunately, we have the opportunity to purchase a few of these beautiful bottles each year. De Toren The Black Lion is a wine made entirely from the Syrah grape, sourced from the finest vineyards in Stellenbosch. Thanks to De Toren's expertise, they ferment and age the grapes in such a way that this magnificent red wine is created.

The Tower Book 17 XVII

In addition to De Toren The Black Lion, the winery has another major asset, namely De Toren Book 17 XVII. This red wine is an excellent Bordeaux blend that makes our mouths water. However, we only have a few bottles of De Toren Book 17 XVII available. Very few bottles come out of the De Toren cellars. We are fortunate enough to be able to acquire a few of these gems each year. So be quick, because when it's gone, it's gone.
