The AD1212 is a blend of the finest fruit from 20-year-old vineyards. Careful vinification, precise blending, and 12 months of aging in French oak barrels combine to create this harmonious and elegant wine. In 1212 AD, monks made their first wine in the monastery of Santa Maria di Decugnano. The wine was sold to the church. Today, Decugnano dei Barbi still produces wine in the same place, naturally incorporating all the innovations that have come since then. The AD1212 is a tribute to this rich history.

The history of the Decugnano dei Barbi winery

Claudio Barbi founded his own winery in Orvieto in 1973, at the age of just 25. He had been searching for a winery for some time where he could fully focus on quality wines when he came across the abandoned Decugnano estate in Orvieto. This estate stood out for its beautiful terroir, so he decided to purchase it and rename it Decugnano dei Barbi. The winery has 32 hectares of vineyards planted with various grape varieties, including Grechetto, Procanico, Vermentino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano, and Syrah. The grapes come from various vineyards in Orvieto, Umbria. The blend for this AD 1212 consists of Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. They all come from different vineyards in Orvieto, Umbria. The soil consists of marl and loam and is rich in fossil shells. The vines are planted at an altitude of 320 meters above sea level, where the grapes benefit from an excellent climate. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 24 degrees Celsius in stainless steel tanks for 12 to 15 days. This is followed by a maceration of the skins for 7 to 14 days. Some of the wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels. After this, the wine is blended and bottled, and it ages in the bottle for a further 6 months.

Enjoy this AD 1212

The wine excels in elegant and pure fruit. On the nose, this AD 1212 has hints of blackberry, cherry, plum, and a touch of vanilla and leather. The palate is unparalleled, full of aromas and beautiful hints of black fruit, a touch of leather, vanilla, and cedar, along with some fresh herbs. Thanks in part to the 12 months of oak aging, this is a wine you'll never forget. The AD 1212 received 92 points from James Suckling.
